AI & Mobility Hackathon 2026!

(de voertaal van dit event is Engels)

On 4 November, the AI & Mobility Hackathon brings together students and early career researchers from different backgrounds to work on real mobility challenges!

With use cases provided by partners from the AiM-TT community and the broader TU Delft AI & Mobility network, participants get the chance to work directly with the participating organisations on the questions they currently face. Participants also get the opportunity to connect with these organisations to learn more about their work and explore possible connections for future research, internships or their career.

The hackathon is aimed at MSc students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers at TU Delft, as well as students from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. Participants from different academic backgrounds are welcome! However, keep in mind that challenges will be focused on the mobility domain.

Participants will work in small, multidisciplinary teams of 5. Each team will spend the day understanding its challenge, developing a solution approach and building a first prototype. Challenge owners will be there to introduce their cases and provide input during the day.

Registration takes place individually. The hackathon teams will be formed during the morning of the event.

What will you work on at the AI & Mobility Hackathon?

Participants can expect real-world challenges from public and private organizations across the mobility sector, including Rijkswaterstaat, NDW, the Municipality of Rotterdam, FlixBus, and other partners. The topics span a wide range of mobility domains, such as traffic management (combining floating-car and loop-detector data to detect queue tails); climate resilience (assessing how disruptions affect traffic flow); and transport service planning (exploring pricing or supply decisions). Other possible fields include computer vision for traffic-sign analysis, urban mobility using bike-sharing data, and road safety using driving-behaviour data.

The case studies provide participants with practical, real-world datasets and the opportunity to develop analytical methods, code, concepts, or working prototypes with direct input from industry experts. Whatever the topic, you’ll work with a team and industry experts to turn data and ideas into a practical solution by the end of the day!

Team matching process: ins and outs

Before the Hackathon Day: You can choose your preliminary challenge domain preferences on the registration form based on the briefs provided. We will pre-match all participants based on topic preferences and their academic backgrounds. Briefs will be provided at a later date.

On the Hackathon Day: On the day of the event, each case owner from the industrial company/authority will deliver a pitch on their case. You will then have a short window to confirm or adjust your final preference via an on-site vote. The final team matching will be determined by on-site vote. Each team will consist of max. 5 members. To ensure every challenge is tackled and each team has a multidisciplinary background and skills, we cannot guarantee every individual’s first preference or pre-formed teams.

From opportunity to impact

The potential of AI is enormous, but turning that potential into practical solutions requires close collaboration between researchers, governments and industry.
