LEAP AI

A Layered, Explainable Approach to Intelligent Greenhouse Horticulture (LEAP-AI)
Main applicant: Prof T. Keviczky, Delft University of Technology

Greenhouse horticulture allows us to reliably grow fresh and safe food where it is needed, with minimal land, and protection from changing and unfavorable climates. Unfortunately, greenhouses also increase pressure on local resources such as water and energy. This project investigates how layered AI-based control systems can make greenhouses more resource efficient while ensuring that the decisions made by an algorithm are explainable to humans to facilitate the eventual adoption of this technology. The envisioned impact of this project and proposed solution is threefold: 1) increase sustainability of greenhouses, 2) decrease costs for greenhouse products, and 3) improve food security.
