Recent advances in large language and multi-modal models have brought human language technologies to the forefront of AI. We are at a tipping point witnessing the drastic growth of HLT applications and their transformative impact on the way we communicate and interact\, with humans and with machines. \nComing along with the rapid increase of HLT usage\, however\, are pressing concerns about the inherent shortcomings of such technologies and the social and ethical implications. The stranglehold of the transformative technologies by private giants further raises the barrier to overcoming these challenges. DESCRIPTION:[placeholder] \nIn deze AI Lab Lunch presenteren het Aidro Lab en het XAIT Lab zichzelf en hun laatste ontwikkelingen! \n(De voertaal van dit evenement is Engels) \nThe AidroLab brings together fundamental and applied AI to push the boundaries of science\, enabling resilient and sustainable urban water systems. Fast and accurate AI-tools are needed to model the physical processes within water networks and during flooding events. AidroLab believes that the most promising techniques to develop such tools are Graph Neural Networks or GNNs – an extension of deep learning to graph data structures. They are also exploring other AI-applications that can complement our GNN models and provide a thorough AI-based digital twin of (urban) water systems. \nThe XAIT Lab develops novel approaches that focus on the explainable aspect of AI for mobility. They incorporate explainability into three core modules within mobility decision support systems: state estimation\, prediction and optimization. This means integrating multimodal data\, contextual information and novel AI techniques into a single holistic digital twin platform. The result is augmented digital twinning methodologies with explainable AI techniques\, creating a new class of AI twins for cities. SUMMARY:AI for Crisis Response and Climate Security
DESCRIPTION:AI for Crisis Response and Climate Security: Opportunities\, Challenges and Future Directions (De voertaal van dit event is Engels) \nOver the past decade\, we have been confronted with floods and storms\, pandemics\, and conflict. At the same time\, AI has undoubtedly changed the way humans interact and make decisions. As such\, AI holds substantial promise for understanding and mitigating some of the world’s ‘super-wicked problems’\, e.g.\, the climate crisis\, pandemics\, or food security. For instance\, AI is used to analyse the damages resulting from earthquakes or storms to better allocate resources and plan the recovery; to predict how people move in disaster affected areas\, or how human mobility will contribute to the spread of a virus; and to forecast the needs of a disaster-affected population for food\, water\, shelter\, or financial assistance. However\, decisions in disasters are characterized by high levels of complexity\, uncertainty\, and different moral dilemmas that any AI has to account for. At the same time\, crisis decisions are often urgent. We know that under time pressure and when the stakes are high\, decisions are prone to a range of cognitive biases. \nIn this workshop\, we aim to unpack the main opportunities\, challenges\, and to explore the ways forward to design\, develop and use AI for Crisis Response and Climate security. He is the Director of UrbanResilience.AI Lab whose research focuses on creating advanced computational models and data science algorithms to advance smart and equitable resilience to crises. His research program integrates advanced machine learning and complex systems-based computational modeling into infrastructure resilience assessments in order to understand and predict complex interactions in the nexus of humans-disasters-built environment. In his talk Ali Mostafavi will expand on using AI for smart crisis response and resilience: how can research on combining community-scale big data with deep and machine learning models improve the ability of a city to withstand disruptions and rapidly recover from crises. \nThomas Baar – A Global Food Crisis: Modelling and Uncertainty\nis a product development manager at the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). He is responsible for coordinating the IPC Digital Innovation Agenda\, which focuses on modelling and consensus building in support of the IPC analysis process. In addition\, he coordinates the design and roll-out of the new IPC Analysis Platform. The IPC Analysis Platform will support analysts and facilitators in conducting and communicating the IPC analysis process more efficiently and effectively. Simultaneously\, it will provide an enabling infrastructure for further digital innovation and the integration of validated technologies into the IPC. In his talk Thomas Baar will showcase how AI is improving the analysis process of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)\, and he will discuss the link between automated and human decision-making. \nMarc van den Homberg – Artificial Intelligence and Big data for disaster risk management: opportunities and challenges for the Red Cros Red Crescent Movement\nis the scientific lead of 510\, an initiative of The Netherlands Red Cross. 510’s mission is to shape the future of humanitarian aid by converting data into understanding and supporting humanitarian relief workers\, decision-makers\, and people affected so that they can better prepare for and cope with disasters. His research concerns improving preparedness and response to natural hazards and complex emergencies through data-driven risk assessments\, impact-based forecasting\, information management\, and governance mechanisms. He leads the collaboration with academia and supervises MSc/PhD research about 510’s projects with over 40 African and Asian National Red Cross societies. Marc is an Advisory board member of WMO The High-Impact Weather Project (HIWeather) and IFRCs Early Action Protocol Validation Committee. Before 510\, Marc was the leader and co-founder within TNO\, the Netherlands Research and Technology Organization\, of the ICT for Development (ICT4D) team with which he implemented pro-poor ICT innovations. In his talk\, Marc will show examples of 510’s use-inspired research on AI and big data for disaster risk management while considering data gaps\, accountability\, and explainability.

This means incorporating human feedback into the loop\, iteratively improving decision-making and driving behaviour changes. They focus on two important built environment challenges: energy transition and circularity. By using AI to augment human intelligence and support negotiation and deliberation continuously – while adapting to and driving human behaviour – they aim to close the policy-practice gap responsibly and inclusively. \nThe AiDAPT Lab (AI for a sustainable and resilient built environment) aims at creating new scientific paradigms towards a more reliable and sustainable built environment by bridging fundamental and applied AI. Met dan ook nog eens Rotterdam als doorvoerhaven waar zo’n beetje de hele wereld gebruik van maakt en wat dus voortdurend grote transportstromen veroorzaakt – over water\, weg en rail. Samen met Bob Huisman\, Hoofd R&D Knooppunt-Logistiek van de NS\, en Prof. Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt\, TU Delft Faculteit Elektrotechniek\, Wiskunde en Informatica\, die zullen toelichten hoe de NS en de TU Delft samen onderzoek doen om onze Mobiliteit te verbeteren. \nAlgoritmisch onderzoek en -ontwikkeling voor het rangeren van treinen op spoorwegknooppunten\nAlgoritmen kunnen belangrijke beslissingen ondersteunen; in dit geval het ondersteunen van de voorbereiding van treinen zodat zij in de dienstregeling kunnen rijden: waar te parkeren\, wanneer schoon te maken\, en welke treinen aan welke slots in de dienstregeling te koppelen. Bij het ondersteunen van zulke beslissingen over de echte wereld wordt je geconfronteerd met een lange lijst van onzekerheden\, speciale beperkingen\, voorkeuren van mensen\, uitzonderingen en allerlei andere details. Het is niet alleen lastig om alle relevante informatie op tijd te verkrijgen\, de details die worden opgenomen zijn ook van invloed op welke algoritmische technieken het meest effectief zijn. Het vinden van de beste combinatie van model en algoritme vereist expertise over de rekenkundige aspecten\, en inzicht in wat in de praktijk belangrijk is. Zijn voornaamste doel is het ontwikkelen van nieuwe algoritmische technieken die het mogelijk maken om uitdagingen aan te gaan die een succesvol gebruik van algoritmische en kunstmatige intelligentie plannings- en optimalisatietechnieken in de praktijk in de weg staan. Hij werkt vooral aan algoritmische uitdagingen in het kader van de energietransitie en het spoorvervoer. \n[placeholder] \nBob Huisman is manager van de groep R&D Hub Logistics bij de NS\, verantwoordelijk voor onderzoek en ontwikkeling gericht op het oplossen van uitdagende logistieke problemen. Zijn team werkt nauw samen met universiteiten om algoritmen te ontwikkelen die worden geïmplementeerd in softwareproducten. DESCRIPTION:[placeholder] \nBusiness Breakfast Club: Ondernemen met een goed gevoel! \n \nDe Ronald McDonald Huiskamer Delft is een warm rustpunt voor ouders op de kinderafdeling van het Reinier de Graaf ziekenhuis. Midden in het ziekenhuis\, even weg uit de ziekenhuissfeer: geen witte jassen en behandelplannen\, maar zachte banken\, koffie\, een grote houten tafel en een televisie. \nIn de Huiskamer is er ruimte om de krant door te bladeren\, te werken of bezoek te ontvangen. Boven alles is het een plek om even tot rust te komen. Naast de Huiskamer is er een Speelkamer voor de jongsten en een Jeugdlounge voor tieners. De Huiskamer\, Speelkamer en Jeugdlounge worden onderhouden door een betrokken groep van vrijwilligers. Zij vangen ouders op\, bieden een luisterend oor of helpen met praktische zaken. De vrijwilligers ondersteunen op de afdeling met niet medische handelingen en zijn er in de middag om een boekje voor te lezen of samen met de kinderen te knutselen of te bouwen om de lange ziekenhuisdagen te doorbreken. \nDe Business Breakfast Club Delft-Westland is een club van betrokken ondernemers uit de regio Delft\, Westland en omstreken\, die maandelijks bij elkaar komen voor een ontbijtbijeenkomst. Één ding hebben ze allemaal gemeen: Ze dragen de Ronald McDonald Huiskamer Delft in het Reinier de Graaf ziekenhuis een warm hart toe.
