SUMMARY:AI Lab Lunch: DeTaiL Lab & SELF Lab
DESCRIPTION:During this Lab Lunch the DeTaiL Lab and the SELF Lab will present themselves and their latest developments! \n(This event will be held in English) \n DeTAIL is all about training & innovation in tensor-based AI methods for biomedical signals. Within the DeTAIL Lab\, the team focuses on both the development of novel low-rank tensor methods and their application for biomedical signal processing\, thereby enabling a much faster\, and therefore more energy-sustainable\, training of AI models from large datasets without any loss of accuracy.\n—- \n \nThe SELF Lab is the Smart Edge Lab for Healthcare. Today’s AI solutions are extremely power-hungry and are unsuitable for energy-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT)-edge devices. Deploying AI at the edge requires new computing engines with energy efficiencies 100 to 1000 times better than current state-of-the-art technologies. The SELF Lab targets the design and development of smart edge computing engines. They demonstrate their superiority for personalized healthcare\, such as early epilepsy detection (a neurological disease that manifests as a brain-wide phenomenon). \n\nRegister via the button above or below!Note for TU Delft PhDs\nPer 4 seminars from the AI (-related) seminar series: Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence Systems (HCAIS) Deep Dive; and Delft AI Lab Lunches\, PhD candidates from partaking TU Delft faculties can earn 0.5 GSC for up to 1.5 GSC (category: Discipline Related Skills). SUMMARY:AI Lab Lunch: AidroLab & XAIT Lab
DESCRIPTION:During this AI Lab Lunch the Aidro Lab and the XAIT Lab will present themselves and their latest developments! \n(This event will be held in English) \nThe AidroLab brings together fundamental and applied AI to push the boundaries of science\, enabling resilient and sustainable urban water systems. Fast and accurate AI-tools are needed to model the physical processes within water networks and during flooding events. AidroLab believes that the most promising techniques to develop such tools are Graph Neural Networks or GNNs – an extension of deep learning to graph data structures. They are also exploring other AI-applications that can complement our GNN models and provide a thorough AI-based digital twin of (urban) water systems. \nThe XAIT Lab develops novel approaches that focus on the explainable aspect of AI for mobility. They incorporate explainability into three core modules within mobility decision support systems: state estimation\, prediction and optimization. This means integrating multimodal data\, contextual information and novel AI techniques into a single holistic digital twin platform. The result is augmented digital twinning methodologies with explainable AI techniques\, creating a new class of AI twins for cities. Such approaches provide tangible and concrete decision support that helps resilient cities to tackle urban problems such as evacuation\, energy\, long-term planning and infrastructure operations. \nNote for TU Delft PhDs\nPer 4 seminars from the AI (-related) seminar series: Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence Systems (HCAIS) Deep Dive; and Delft AI Lab Lunches\, PhD candidates from partaking TU Delft faculties can earn 0.5 GSC for up to 1.5 GSC (category: Discipline Related Skills). Check with your local Faculty Graduate School if they offer this option for earning GSC; and with your supervisors if they accept our seminars on your Doctoral Education list. If you already have form\, don’t forget to bring it with you \nAI Lab Lunch Series\nThe Delft AI Lab Lunch is a monthly meet-up hosted by the TU Delft AI Labs & Talent community at Mondai | House of AI. Every month\, two Delft AI Labs present their work and discuss challenges and developments made in their field. During these events\, you can participate\, learn\, make connections\, inspire and be inspired by and with the Delft AI Labs. This event is open for all interested.

SUMMARY:AI for Crisis Response and Climate Security
DESCRIPTION:AI for Crisis Response and Climate Security: Opportunities\, Challenges and Future Directions (This event will be held in English) \nOver the past decade\, we have been confronted with floods and storms\, pandemics\, and conflict. At the same time\, AI has undoubtedly changed the way humans interact and make decisions. As such\, AI holds substantial promise for understanding and mitigating some of the world’s ‘super-wicked problems’\, e.g.\, the climate crisis\, pandemics\, or food security. For instance\, AI is used to analyse the damages resulting from earthquakes or storms to better allocate resources and plan the recovery; to predict how people move in disaster affected areas\, or how human mobility will contribute to the spread of a virus; and to forecast the needs of a disaster-affected population for food\, water\, shelter\, or financial assistance. However\, decisions in disasters are characterized by high levels of complexity\, uncertainty\, and different moral dilemmas that any AI has to account for. At the same time\, crisis decisions are often urgent. We know that under time pressure and when the stakes are high\, decisions are prone to a range of cognitive biases. \nIn this workshop\, we aim to unpack the main opportunities\, challenges\, and to explore the ways forward to design\, develop and use AI for Crisis Response and Climate security. Our aim is to connect researchers\, policy-makers\, and practitioners active in this domain\, and to develop a joint research agenda. \nProgramme\n12.30-13.30     Networking lunch \n13.30-15.00     Inspiration session \nWe explore different application fields\, and gain insights from the practice of AI research and use. SUMMARY:AI Lab Lunch: AiBLE Lab & AiDAPT Lab
DESCRIPTION:[placeholder] \nDuring this AI Lab Lunch the AiBLE Lab and the AiDAPT Lab will present themselves and their latest developments. \n(This event will be held in English) \nThe AiBLE Lab (Activating Intelligence in Building Lasting and Liveable Environments) aims to help reach effective\, transparent and lasting decisions and agreements. This means incorporating human feedback into the loop\, iteratively improving decision-making and driving behaviour changes. They focus on two important built environment challenges: energy transition and circularity. By using AI to augment human intelligence and support negotiation and deliberation continuously – while adapting to and driving human behaviour – they aim to close the policy-practice gap responsibly and inclusively. \nThe AiDAPT Lab (AI for a sustainable and resilient built environment) aims at creating new scientific paradigms towards a more reliable and sustainable built environment by bridging fundamental and applied AI. They bring together computer vision\, data science\, and decision optimization methods through the development of deep learning\, reinforcement learning\, and uncertainty quantification frameworks that help us analyze and synthesize decisions for architectural and structural systems. \nDelft AI Lab Lunch Series\nThe Delft AI Lab Lunch is a monthly meet-up hosted by the TU Delft AI Labs & Talent community at Mondai | House of AI. Every month\, two Delft AI Labs present their work and discuss challenges and developments made in their field. During these events\, you can participate\, learn\, make connections\, inspire and be inspired by and with the Delft AI Labs. This event is open for all interested.

SUMMARY:AI Meet Up: AI for Mobility
DESCRIPTION:(This event will be held in English) \nMondai | House of AI is pleased to host our upcoming Meet Up in collaboration with our partner Kickstart AI! \n \nMobility\, Transport and Logistics \n“Significantly decreasing greenhouse gas emissions\, reducing the number of traffic casualties and also strengthening the economy: these can all be done in the Netherlands if we raise our mobility\, transport and logistics to a higher level using artificial intelligence (AI).\nThe Netherlands is a small country with a lot of inhabitants and a great deal of economic activity. On top of that\, we have Rotterdam as a transhipment port that just about the entire world uses\, so we constantly have huge transport flow – by water\, road and rail. What that all means is that we have been pushing the limits of our infrastructure in terms of mobility\, transport and logistics for a while now.”\n– NLAIC: Sector Mobility\, Transport and Logistics \nJoin us for the fifth TU Delft AI Meet Up where we will take a closer look at AI for Mobility. Together with Bob Huisman\, Manager Research & Development Logistic Hub for the NS\, and Prof. Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt\, TU Delft Faculty of EEMCS\, who will give insight into how the TU Delft and the NS are working together to improve our mobility. \n\n\n\n\nAlgorithmic research and development for train shunting at railway hubs\nAlgorithms can support important decisions; in this case supporting the preparation of trains such that they can run in the timetable: where to park\, when to clean\, and which trains to match to which slots in the timetable. When supporting such decisions about the real world\, one is confronted with a long list of uncertainties\, special constraints\, people’s preferences\, exceptions\, and all other kinds of details. It is not only difficult to get all the relevant information in time\, the details that are included also affect which algorithmic techniques are most effective. Finding the best combination of model and algorithm requires expertise on the computational aspects\, as well as understanding of what is important in practice. Bob and Mathijs explain how scientists and developers can work together\, why this is motivating for both sides\, and what is needed to get from ideas to implementation and operation. \n\n\n\n\nMarshalling yard in Zwolle at the Engelse Werk park \nProgramme\n15:45 Doors open\n16:00 – 17:00 Keynote speeches by Bob Huisman (NS) and Prof. Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt (TU Delft\, EEMCS) on the collaboration efforts of the NS and the TU Delft\n17:00 Networking drinks! \nSpeakers\nMathijs de Weerdt is full professor on Algorithms for Planning and Scheduling and section head of the Algorithmics Group at Delft University of Technology. His main aim is to develop new algorithmic techniques that cope with challenges prohibiting successful use of algorithmic and artificial intelligence planning and optimization techniques in practice. He mainly works on such algorithmic challenges related to the energy transition and railway transportation. \n[placeholder] \n \nBob Huisman is manager of the R&D Hub Logistics group at the railway operating company NS\, responsible for research and development dedicated to solving challenging logistic problems. His team works closely together with universities to develop algorithms which are implemented in software products. Huisman is one the Principal Investigators of the ROBUST AI program and chair of its User’s Committee. \n[placeholder] \nCurious about how AI improves our Mobility? Then register via the button above or below. \nOur partner: Kickstart AI\nis a non-profit initiative that aims to accelerate AI adoption in the Netherlands\, and improve society through the use of AI.  Together four corporates\, including the Nederlandse Spoorwegen\, want to give back to the community. Through ongoing funding and pooling of data science resources\, they created and continue to foster a thriving AI community.\n \nOur Goal\nThis Meet Up group is set up to showcase the Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem of Delft and Zuid-Holland\, to inspire students and the surrounding area\, and to give academia and industry a place to network. \nThe Meet Ups are a monthly event\, where each time a new AI issue is put to the test. So keep an eye on the agenda! \nFor more information on AI research @ TU Delft\, see here.
